What to Do If You’ve Lost Power in Your Rotherham Home - MP Electrical

Losing power in your home can be frustrating and even a little worrying. While power cuts caused by external faults are out of your control, sometimes the issue may lie within your home’s electrical system. To help, we’ve created this simple step-by-step guide to help you identify the problem, restore power, or figure out when it’s time to call in the experts.

Step 1: Check for a Power Cut

Before diving into your home’s electrics, confirm whether the issue is a local power cut:

  1. Look outside: Are your neighbors’ lights off as well?
  2. Contact your DNO: Dial 105 to check if your area is affected by a power cut.

If it’s a local outage, your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) will give you updates.

Step 2: Check Your Fuseboard (Consumer Unit)

If it’s not a power cut, the issue may be isolated to your home.

Locate your consumer unit: This is usually near the front of your property, often in a hallway, garage, or cupboard.

Inspect for tripped switches: Look for circuit breakers or the RCD (Residual Current Device) that may have tripped to the “off” position.

  •  The RCD is typically a larger switch with a test button.
  • Circuit breakers are smaller switches labeled for different circuits (e.g., lights, sockets).

Step 3: Reset the Tripped Switch

If the RCD has tripped, try resetting it:

  • Push the switch back to the “on” position.
  • If it stays on, your power should be restored.
  • If it trips again, move to Step 4.

If only a specific circuit breaker has tripped:

  • Turn the breaker back to the “on” position.
  • If it trips again, it’s likely an issue with that circuit.

Step 4: Isolate the Faulty Circuit

If the RCD or circuit breaker continues to trip, you’ll need to pinpoint which part of the circuit is causing the problem:

Unplug appliances: Disconnect everything plugged into sockets on the affected circuit.

Reset the switch: Try turning the circuit breaker or RCD back on.

Plug appliances back in one by one:

  • If the power trips again after plugging in a specific appliance, that appliance may be faulty.
  • Leave it unplugged and avoid using it until it’s checked or repaired.

Step 5: Check for Water Damage or Damp

Sometimes water ingress or damp can cause tripping issues:

  • Inspect sockets, light fittings, or appliances near potential water sources (e.g., bathrooms or kitchens).
  • Avoid touching anything wet and call an electrician immediately if water damage is suspected.

Step 6: When to Call an Electrician

If you’ve followed the above steps and the issue persists, or you’re unsure about handling electrical components, it’s time to call in the professionals.
