If you run a business in Rotherham or South Yorkshire, you have legal responsibilities when it comes to electrical safety. Whether you rent a shop, run a restaurant, manage an office, or operate from a warehouse, the law requires you to keep your electrical systems safe. Here’s what you need to know.
Your Legal Obligations
Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act, all employers and business owners must ensure that electrical installations and equipment are maintained in a safe condition. This applies to every type of business, from a one-person operation to a large employer. You must ensure all fixed wiring is safe and periodically inspected, portable electrical equipment (PAT) is tested where appropriate, any electrical faults are repaired promptly by a qualified electrician, and records of inspections and testing are kept.
How Often Should Business Electrics Be Tested?
The IET Wiring Regulations recommend periodic inspection at intervals depending on the type of premises. For commercial properties, the recommended maximum interval between EICR inspections is typically five years, though some environments require more frequent testing. Restaurants, takeaways, and food businesses may need testing every three years due to the harsher environment. Shops and offices are typically every five years. Industrial premises vary depending on the conditions. Your insurer may also require evidence of regular electrical testing as a condition of your policy.
What Happens If You Don’t Comply?
Failing to maintain safe electrics in a business can have serious consequences. If an employee or customer is injured due to faulty electrics, you could face prosecution under health and safety law. Your insurance may refuse to pay out if you can’t demonstrate regular testing. Local authority inspectors can issue improvement notices or prohibition notices, forcing you to close until the work is done. For food businesses, environmental health officers routinely check for electrical safety compliance during inspections.
What Does a Commercial EICR Involve?
A commercial EICR is similar to a domestic one, but covers the full extent of your business premises’ electrical installation. A qualified electrician will inspect the consumer unit and distribution boards, test all circuits for earth fault protection and insulation resistance, check socket outlets, lighting circuits, and fixed equipment connections, verify that fire alarm and emergency lighting circuits are sound, and provide a detailed report with any issues graded by severity. The inspection can usually be carried out during business hours with minimal disruption, though some tests may require brief power interruptions to individual circuits.
