What Is Nuisance Tripping?

Nuisance tripping is when your RCD (residual current device) or MCB (miniature circuit breaker) trips and cuts the power even though there is no genuine electrical fault. The lights go out, your appliances switch off, and when you check the consumer unit, one or more switches have flipped — but nothing is actually wrong.

It is one of the most frustrating electrical problems homeowners deal with. You reset the switch, everything works fine for a while, and then it trips again. Sometimes it happens at the same time every day. Sometimes it seems completely random.

If this is happening in your home in Rotherham or South Yorkshire, you are not alone — nuisance tripping is one of the most common callouts we attend. The good news is that the cause can almost always be found and fixed.

Why Do RCDs Trip?

To understand nuisance tripping, it helps to know what your RCD is actually doing. An RCD monitors the flow of electrical current through the live and neutral conductors. In normal operation, the current flowing out on the live wire and returning on the neutral wire should be exactly equal. If the RCD detects even a small imbalance — as little as 30 milliamps — it assumes current is leaking somewhere it should not be (potentially through a person) and cuts the power in milliseconds.

This is a life-saving function. But the sensitivity that makes RCDs so effective at preventing electrocution also makes them vulnerable to tripping when there is no real danger.

Common Causes of Nuisance Tripping

Accumulated earth leakage across multiple circuits. This is the most common cause we see in Rotherham homes. Every appliance and cable in your home leaks a tiny amount of current to earth — this is normal and unavoidable. But if too many circuits are protected by a single RCD, those tiny leakages add up. When the total reaches 30mA, the RCD trips even though no individual circuit has a fault. This is especially common in older consumer units that use just two RCDs to protect all circuits.

Faulty appliances. An appliance with deteriorating insulation can leak enough current to trip the RCD. Common culprits include washing machines, dishwashers, immersion heaters, electric showers, and older fridges or freezers. The fault may be intermittent — the appliance works fine most of the time but leaks current when it heats up or when humidity is high.

Outdoor circuits. garden lighting, external sockets, and outbuilding supplies are exposed to weather. Rain getting into a junction box, a damaged cable, or moisture in an outdoor socket can cause enough earth leakage to trip the RCD.

Damaged cables. A nail or screw driven through a cable during DIY work, rodent damage in the loft, or cables degraded by age can all cause intermittent earth faults that trip the RCD.

Moisture and condensation. Damp properties, bathrooms without adequate extraction, and consumer units mounted on external walls can all contribute to nuisance tripping through moisture-related leakage. This is often linked to green goo forming in your fuseboard.

Faulty RCD. RCDs themselves can develop faults over time. An ageing or defective RCD may become hypersensitive and trip at lower leakage levels than it should. This is less common but worth ruling out if other causes have been eliminated.

Lightning and power surges. Nearby lightning strikes or voltage spikes from the grid can cause a momentary surge that trips your RCD. If your RCD only trips during storms, this is likely the cause.

How We Diagnose Nuisance Tripping

When you call us about nuisance tripping, Mat will carry out a systematic investigation to find the root cause:

1. Visual inspection. We start by inspecting your consumer unit for signs of overheating, corrosion, moisture ingress, or loose connections. We check the RCD type and rating and look at how your circuits are distributed.

2. Circuit-by-circuit testing. We disconnect circuits one at a time and test the RCD with each circuit isolated. This narrows down which circuit is causing the problem.

3. Insulation resistance testing. Using specialist test equipment, we measure the insulation resistance of each circuit. A low reading indicates a cable or connection that is leaking current to earth.

4. Earth leakage measurement. We can measure the actual earth leakage current on each circuit using a leakage clamp meter. This tells us exactly how much each circuit is contributing to the cumulative leakage.

5. Appliance testing. If the fault appears to be on a specific circuit, we test individual appliances to identify any that are leaking excessive current.

How We Fix Nuisance Tripping

The fix depends on the cause:

Too many circuits on one RCD. The permanent solution is a consumer unit upgrade with individual RCBOs on each circuit. An RCBO combines the function of an MCB and an RCD in a single device, so each circuit has its own independent protection. If one circuit trips, everything else stays on. This is the standard we fit on all new consumer units.

Faulty appliance. We identify the appliance and advise you to repair or replace it. Sometimes a simple fix like replacing a heating element is enough.

Damaged cable. We locate and repair or replace the damaged section of cable. If the cable is in a wall or ceiling, we use specialist equipment to pinpoint the fault location.

Moisture issues. We address the moisture source, reseal cable entries, and may recommend relocating the consumer unit or improving ventilation in the area.

Faulty RCD. We replace the defective RCD with a new one of the correct type and rating.

Why RCBO Boards Solve Nuisance Tripping

The single most effective upgrade for persistent nuisance tripping is replacing your consumer unit with a full RCBO board. Here is why:

With a traditional split-load board, you typically have two RCDs each protecting half your circuits. If any circuit on that half develops a small leak, the RCD protects everything on that side — and everything trips.

With an RCBO board, every circuit has its own dedicated RCD and MCB combined into one device. If one circuit has an issue, only that circuit trips. Your lights, fridge, freezer, and everything else stay on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is nuisance tripping dangerous?

The tripping itself is a safety mechanism working correctly. But the underlying cause — accumulated leakage, a faulty appliance, or damaged cable — can be a genuine safety issue. It is worth getting investigated.

Can I just hold the RCD on with tape?

Absolutely not. This is extremely dangerous. The RCD is tripping for a reason, and bypassing it removes your protection against electric shock and electrical fires.

My RCD trips every time I use the shower. Is that nuisance tripping?

It could be, but it could also be a genuine fault with the shower unit. Electric showers draw a lot of current and their heating elements degrade over time. This needs investigating properly.

Will an EICR find the cause of nuisance tripping?

An EICR includes insulation resistance testing on every circuit, which will identify circuits with excessive earth leakage. It is a good starting point if you are experiencing regular tripping.
