Good outdoor lighting transforms your garden from a space you only use in daylight to somewhere you can enjoy all evening. Whether you want to highlight your landscaping, light up a patio for entertaining, or simply make your driveway safer to navigate after dark, the right lighting makes a huge difference.
As a NAPIT registered electrician in Rotherham, I install garden and outdoor lighting across South Yorkshire. Here’s a guide to the most popular options and what’s involved.
Why Invest in Outdoor Lighting?
Outdoor lighting does more than just look good. Properly planned exterior lighting improves security by eliminating dark spots around your property, increases safety on paths, steps and driveways, extends the usable hours of your outdoor space, adds kerb appeal and can increase property value, and makes your garden features visible after sunset.
Popular Garden Lighting Ideas
Soffit and Fascia Downlights
Recessed LED downlights fitted into your soffits cast a clean wash of light down the walls of your house and across paths and borders below. They’re neat, low-profile and very effective for general illumination around the perimeter of your home. This is one of the most requested outdoor lighting jobs I carry out in Rotherham.
Deck and Patio Lighting
Recessed deck lights, step lights and low-level bollards create a warm, inviting atmosphere on your patio or decking area. LED versions use minimal electricity and can run all evening without adding much to your energy bill. They also make steps and level changes visible — important for safety when you’re entertaining outside.
Garden Spike Lights and Uplighters
Spike lights push into the ground and angle upward to highlight trees, shrubs, architectural features or boundary walls. Uplighting creates dramatic shadows and draws the eye to your garden’s best features. These are typically low-voltage (12V or 24V) and connected to a transformer, making them safe to install in beds and borders.
Post and Pillar Lights
If you have gate pillars or a defined entrance to your driveway, post-mounted lights add a smart, welcoming look. They’re available in a huge range of styles — from traditional lanterns to sleek contemporary designs — and can be wired to come on automatically at dusk using a photocell sensor.
Festoon and String Lights
Festoon lighting strung across a patio or pergola creates a relaxed, social atmosphere. For a permanent installation that looks tidy and lasts, I recommend having a dedicated outdoor circuit installed with weatherproof connection points rather than running extension leads from the house.
Security and Motion-Sensor Lighting
PIR-activated floodlights remain one of the best deterrents against intruders. Modern LED security lights are far brighter and more energy-efficient than the old halogen floods, and many now come with adjustable sensitivity and timer settings. For even better security, consider pairing them with a CCTV system.
What About Solar Lights?
Solar-powered garden lights are cheap and easy to install, but they have limitations. They depend entirely on sunlight to charge, which means they’re dim and unreliable during the shorter, cloudier months — which in South Yorkshire is a good chunk of the year. For reliable, consistent outdoor lighting, a hardwired installation connected to your mains supply is always the better option.
Outdoor Electrical Safety
Any outdoor electrical installation needs to be properly protected against the elements. This means using IP-rated fittings suitable for exterior use (typically IP65 or higher for ground-level installations), SWA (steel wire armoured) cable for underground runs, RCD protection on all outdoor circuits, and weatherproof junction boxes and connectors.
Outdoor electrical work that involves new circuits or fixed wiring is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations and must be carried out by a registered electrician. Using a NAPIT or NICEIC registered installer means the work is automatically signed off without needing a separate building control inspection.
Planning Your Outdoor Lighting
The best results come from thinking about your lighting in layers. Ambient lighting provides overall illumination — soffit lights, post lights and general area lighting. Task lighting covers specific functional areas like a barbecue zone, outdoor kitchen or bin store. Accent lighting highlights features — trees, water features, planting or architectural details. Security lighting covers vulnerable areas like side gates, driveways and rear access points.
I always recommend LED fittings for outdoor use. They last significantly longer than halogen alternatives, use a fraction of the electricity and produce very little heat.
