If your home still has an old-style fuse box with rewirable fuses, it might be time to think about upgrading to a modern consumer unit. A fuse board replacement is one of the most important electrical upgrades you can make — it protects your home, your family and your appliances from electrical faults.
As a NAPIT registered electrician in Rotherham, I carry out fuse board upgrades across South Yorkshire every week. Here are seven signs that your consumer unit needs replacing.
1. Your Fuse Box Still Has Rewirable Fuses
If your fuse board has old ceramic fuse holders with wire inside them, it’s outdated. These were standard decades ago, but they don’t offer the same level of protection as modern MCBs (miniature circuit breakers) and RCDs (residual current devices). A modern consumer unit will trip instantly when it detects a fault — rewirable fuses are far slower to react and can put you at risk of electric shock or fire.
2. Your Electrics Keep Tripping
Frequent tripping is one of the most common signs something isn’t right. While it can sometimes be caused by a faulty appliance, persistent tripping often points to an overloaded or failing fuse board. If you’re experiencing this, have a read of our guide on why your electrics keep tripping — but if the board itself is the problem, a replacement is the fix.
3. You Can See Scorch Marks or Smell Burning
This is a serious warning sign. Scorch marks, discolouration or a burning smell around your fuse board suggest overheating or arcing — both fire hazards. If you notice this, stop using the affected circuits and call an emergency electrician straight away. Do not attempt to inspect or repair the board yourself.
4. Your Board Doesn’t Have RCD Protection
An RCD (residual current device) is a life-saving device that cuts the power in a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking to earth — for example, if you accidentally cut through a cable. Current regulations require RCD protection on almost all circuits. If your board doesn’t have one, it’s not meeting modern safety standards and should be upgraded.
5. You’re Adding New Circuits
Planning a home extension, a garden office, or installing an EV charger? If your existing board doesn’t have spare ways to accommodate new circuits, you’ll need an upgrade. Trying to squeeze extra circuits onto an old board isn’t safe and won’t pass inspection.
6. Your EICR Report Flagged Issues
If you’ve recently had an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) and it flagged C1 or C2 codes relating to your consumer unit, replacement is likely required. Landlords in particular need to act on these findings within 28 days to stay legally compliant.
7. Your Board Is Over 25 Years Old
Electrical standards have changed significantly over the past two decades. If your consumer unit was installed more than 25 years ago, it almost certainly doesn’t meet current BS 7671 wiring regulations. Even if it seems to be working fine, the level of protection it offers is far below what a modern board provides.
What Does a Fuse Board Replacement Involve?
A typical consumer unit upgrade takes around half a day. The process involves isolating the supply, removing the old board, fitting a new one with MCBs and RCDs (or RCBOs for individual circuit protection), testing every circuit and issuing the required electrical certificates.
All consumer unit replacements must be carried out by a qualified electrician registered with a government-approved scheme like NAPIT, and must be notified to building control. This is a legal requirement under Part P of the Building Regulations.
