The villages of Barnburgh, Denaby, and Hickleton sit along the Dearne Valley between Rotherham and Doncaster. They are quiet, residential communities where many homes are older properties with character — stone cottages, pre-war terraces, and post-war semis. But older properties often mean older electrical systems. If you live in any of these villages and you are thinking about getting an EV charger installed or wondering whether your fuseboard needs replacing, this guide covers everything you need to know.
EV Charger Installation in the Dearne Valley Villages
Electric vehicle ownership is growing even in smaller communities like Barnburgh, Denaby, and Hickleton. The problem is that public charging infrastructure has not kept pace — the nearest rapid chargers are in Mexborough, Wath upon Dearne, or further afield in Rotherham and Doncaster. For EV owners in these villages, a home charger is not just convenient — it is practically essential.
The good news is that most properties in these villages suit a home charger perfectly. Detached and semi-detached homes with driveways and garages are common, especially along Barnburgh Lane, Denaby Lane, and the roads around Hickleton. Wall-mounting a charger on the front or side of the property with a short cable run is usually straightforward.
Which Charger Is Right for Rural Properties?
Rural homes in the Dearne Valley often have more roof space for solar panels, which makes the Zappi charger an excellent choice — it diverts surplus solar energy to charge your car for free during daylight hours. If you do not have solar but want the cheapest possible charging, an Ohme Home Pro paired with an overnight tariff like Octopus Go lets you charge for around 2p per mile. For a straightforward setup, the Pod Point Solo 3 is reliable and affordable.
Fuseboard Upgrades: A Common Requirement
Many homes in Barnburgh, Denaby, and Hickleton have fuseboards that are 20 to 40 years old — some even older. In Denaby, the ex-mining terraces from the early 1900s often still have rewirable fuse boards with no RCD protection. In Barnburgh, the stone-built cottages frequently have boards that were never designed for modern electrical demand. In Hickleton, the mix of older farmworker cottages and 1960s builds means boards of varying ages and standards.
If your fuseboard has rewirable fuses, cartridge fuses, or does not have RCD protection, it needs replacing regardless of whether you are getting an EV charger. An RCD can detect a dangerous fault and cut the power in under 40 milliseconds — something an old fuse box simply cannot do. Without that protection, a damaged cable or faulty appliance could cause a fire or deliver a lethal electric shock.
Combining EV Charger and Fuseboard Work
An EV charger draws up to 7kW — a significant load that your consumer unit needs to handle safely. If your board is outdated or already full, it will need upgrading before the charger can be installed. We always assess the fuseboard during every EV charger survey. If both jobs are needed, we do them on the same day — saving you a second visit and keeping the total cost down.
What Does Installation Involve?
A fuseboard upgrade takes around half a day with the power off for 4 to 6 hours. An EV charger installation takes 2 to 4 hours with the power off for roughly 30 minutes during connection. If both are done together, we plan the day so the fuseboard goes in first, then the charger circuit is added to the new board. Every job is NAPIT-certified with full electrical testing and Part P documentation.
