From old rewireable fuse boxes to outdated split-load boards, we replace them with modern 18th Edition metal consumer units fitted with individual RCBO protection — giving every circuit in your home its own dedicated safety device.
We can usually book your upgrade within a few days. Every installation includes full testing, your Electrical Installation Certificate, and Part P Building Control notification.
Why Swinton Homes Often Need a New Board
Swinton’s position between Rotherham and Mexborough in the Dearne Valley means the town has housing from several distinct eras. The older properties around Church Street, Station Street, and the town centre date from the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The larger inter-war and post-war council estates extend towards Kilnhurst and along Piccadilly Road. And the 1970s and 80s private developments around the Fitzwilliam area and Bow Broom brought another wave of building.
Each era left behind different electrical installations, but they share a common thread — the fuseboards fitted at the time are now decades past their expected service life and don’t provide the level of protection that modern regulations demand.
In the Victorian and Edwardian properties, we sometimes still find original switch fuse units or very early consumer units with rewireable fuses on a wooden back board. These installations have no RCD protection and the fuses themselves are slow-acting and easily overrated. If your property has this type of board, it’s a priority upgrade.
The post-war council housing typically received electrical upgrades in the 1980s or 90s. The boards fitted during these programmes were usually MCB units with one or two RCDs — adequate for the time but now showing their age. The grouped RCD arrangement means one fault takes out half the house, and the boards often lack spare ways for the additional circuits that modern living demands.
The 1970s and 80s private estates often have plastic consumer units with MCBs. These may still function mechanically, but the plastic enclosures are no longer considered safe under the 18th Edition of BS 7671, which requires non-combustible metal housings. And after 40-plus years, the internal connections in these boards can become loose, leading to overheating and potential fire risk.
The Problem with Split-Load Boards
Many Swinton homes currently have split-load consumer units — boards where one RCD protects the upstairs circuits and another protects the downstairs circuits (or a similar grouping). While this provides basic earth-leakage protection, it has a significant practical drawback.
If any circuit on a group develops an earth-leakage fault — even a minor one caused by a damp appliance or a slightly worn cable — the entire group loses power. In practice, this means a faulty toaster in the kitchen can cut your upstairs lights, your alarm clock, and your phone charger. In winter, it can mean losing your heating controls at the worst possible time.
Modern RCBO boards solve this completely. Each circuit has its own RCBO, so a fault on the kitchen ring only trips the kitchen RCBO. Every other circuit continues working normally. This is especially important in Swinton’s older properties where minor insulation issues are common — you can identify and fix faults without losing power to the whole house.
Kitchen Circuit Overloading
One issue we see particularly often in Swinton is kitchen circuits that are carrying far more load than they were designed for. Many of the older properties were wired with a single ring final circuit serving the entire kitchen. At the time, this was adequate — a kettle, a fridge, maybe an electric cooker on its own circuit.
Today’s kitchens often include a dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave, induction hob, electric oven, and multiple small appliances all running from the same ring. This places enormous demand on both the cables and the protective devices. An overloaded circuit doesn’t always trip immediately — it can cause the cables to overheat slowly, degrading the insulation over time and creating a hidden fire risk.
When we upgrade a fuseboard in a Swinton property with this issue, we’ll often recommend splitting the kitchen load across two circuits as part of the work. This ensures each circuit is properly protected and the cables aren’t carrying more current than they’re rated for.
What to Expect on Installation Day
A fuseboard replacement in a typical Swinton property takes around four to six hours. We’ll let you know the expected timeframe when we book, as your power will be off for most of the work.
The process starts with isolating your supply and safely removing the old consumer unit. The new metal board is mounted in the same location (or relocated if the current position isn’t suitable), and every circuit is transferred to its own dedicated RCBO. The SPD surge protection is fitted, all connections are made and torque-checked, and the board is clearly labelled.
We then carry out a full schedule of testing on every circuit — insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, RCD disconnection times, and polarity checks. Once everything is confirmed safe and compliant, your power is restored and we talk you through the new board so you know what each switch does and how to reset a tripped RCBO if needed.
Your Electrical Installation Certificate is issued on the day, and we submit the Part P Building Control notification through NAPIT. If you’re a landlord, the new board will help ensure a clean result on your next EICR in Swinton.
