Fuseboard Upgrades for Mexborough Homes

MP Electrical provides NAPIT-registered consumer unit replacements across Mexborough and the Dearne Valley. If your fuseboard is outdated, damaged, or has been flagged during an electrical inspection, we can upgrade it to a modern 18th Edition metal consumer unit with full RCBO protection — usually within a few days of your call.

Based in Rotherham and just a short drive from Mexborough, we carry out fuseboard upgrades for homeowners, landlords, and anyone who’s been told their current board doesn’t meet modern safety standards.

Why Mexborough Properties Need Board Upgrades

Mexborough’s housing reflects the town’s long industrial history. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Bank Street and the town centre, the inter-war council housing, and the post-war developments around the Shimmer estate and Dolcliffe Road area all come with different electrical installations — but many share the same problem: consumer units that were installed decades ago and don’t provide the level of protection required by current wiring regulations.

In the older terraced properties near Mexborough town centre, we commonly find the original cast-iron or Bakelite switch fuse units, or early Wylex boards with rewireable fuses. Some of these installations date back to the 1950s or even earlier. The fuses are slow to operate, provide no earth-leakage protection, and can be dangerously bodged with the wrong fuse wire — something we’ve seen more than once in Mexborough properties.

The inter-war and post-war council housing around the estates typically had their electrics upgraded at some point during the 1980s or 90s, often as part of council modernisation programmes. These upgrades usually installed MCB boards with one or two RCDs in a split-load configuration. While this was the standard approach at the time, it means a single earth-leakage fault can trip one RCD and cut power to half the house — lights, sockets, and all. In a two-storey family home, this usually means losing everything upstairs or everything downstairs in one go.

The properties around Windhill, the newer developments near the canal, and homes along Adwick Road tend to have more modern boards, but even these may lack SPD surge protection or have plastic enclosures that don’t meet current fire safety requirements.

What a Modern Board Provides

Every consumer unit we install in Mexborough is a metal-enclosed 18th Edition board with individual RCBO protection. This means each circuit — lighting upstairs, sockets downstairs, cooker, shower, and so on — has its own dedicated protection device. If one circuit faults, only that circuit trips. Everything else stays on.

The metal enclosure is a regulatory requirement introduced because plastic consumer units were found to contribute to the spread of fire in domestic properties. A metal board contains any internal fault and prevents flames from reaching surrounding materials.

Built-in SPD surge protection guards your home’s electronics against voltage spikes from lightning, power cuts, and grid switching events. This is particularly relevant in areas like Mexborough where overhead power lines are still common in some older streets — making properties more susceptible to surge damage.

When Your Fuseboard Needs Replacing

There are several clear signs that your Mexborough property’s consumer unit has reached the end of its safe working life.

Rewireable fuses are the most obvious indicator. If your board has ceramic holders with visible fuse wire, it’s using technology from the mid-20th century. These fuses are no longer considered adequate protection for a modern home.

No RCD protection means there’s nothing to automatically disconnect the supply if a fault occurs that could cause electrocution. All modern boards include RCD protection as standard — usually via individual RCBOs on every circuit.

Constant tripping — particularly where one trip takes out multiple circuits — suggests your board is either overloaded, has a fault developing, or uses grouped RCDs that cause widespread disruption when one circuit has an issue.

Scorch marks, buzzing sounds, or a smell of burning from your consumer unit are serious warning signs that require immediate attention. These indicate loose connections or overheating, which can lead to fire. If you notice any of these, call us straight away.

Adding new circuits for EV chargers, home offices, hot tubs, or outbuildings often means your existing board doesn’t have enough spare capacity. Upgrading the entire board at this point is usually more practical and cost-effective than trying to extend an ageing unit.

The Installation Process in Mexborough

A consumer unit replacement typically takes four to six hours in a standard Mexborough property. Your power will be off for most of the work — we’ll confirm the timing when we book your appointment so you can plan your day around it.

We isolate the supply, remove the old board, and mount the new metal consumer unit. Every circuit is reconnected with its own RCBO, the SPD is installed, and everything is clearly labelled. We then carry out full electrical testing — insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, RCD operation times, and polarity checks on every circuit — before restoring your power.

On completion, you receive your Electrical Installation Certificate and we handle the Part P Building Control notification through NAPIT. For landlord properties, the new board will also help ensure your next EICR in Mexborough comes back satisfactory.
