Your fuseboard, also known as a consumer unit, is the heart of your home’s electrical system. It controls every circuit, protects against faults, and keeps your family safe. But if your fuseboard is more than 15 to 20 years old, it could be putting your home at risk. As NAPIT-registered electricians in Rotherham, we replace outdated fuseboards every week. Here is how to tell if yours needs upgrading.
What Does a Fuseboard Actually Do?
Your fuseboard distributes electricity from the mains supply to every circuit in your home — your lights, sockets, cooker, shower, and everything else. It also contains protective devices that cut the power if something goes wrong, such as an overload, a short circuit, or an earth fault. A modern consumer unit uses RCDs (residual current devices) and MCBs (miniature circuit breakers) to provide this protection. Older boards use rewirable fuses or cartridge fuses that offer far less safety.
Signs Your Fuseboard Needs Replacing
There are several warning signs that your fuseboard is outdated or failing. If you notice any of these in your home in Rotherham, Wickersley, Maltby, or anywhere in South Yorkshire, it is time to get it checked.
Your Board Has Rewirable Fuses
If your fuseboard has fuse wire that you have to manually replace when it blows, it is seriously outdated. Rewirable fuses were common in homes built before the 1960s and offer minimal protection by modern standards. They do not trip automatically, they can be rewired with the wrong rating, and they provide no RCD protection against electric shock. We see these regularly in older properties across Mexborough, Denaby, and Barnburgh.
No RCD Protection
RCDs detect tiny imbalances in electrical current that indicate a fault — such as electricity flowing through a person — and cut the power in milliseconds. If your fuseboard does not have at least one RCD, your home does not meet current safety standards. This is one of the most common issues we find during EICR inspections across Dinnington, Swinton, and Wath upon Dearne.
Frequent Tripping
If your fuses blow or breakers trip regularly, it could mean your board is overloaded or that a circuit breaker is failing. Modern homes use more electricity than ever — with EV chargers, heat pumps, multiple appliances, and home offices — and an old board may not be able to cope. This is especially common in homes across Kiveton Park and Hickleton where the original wiring was designed for much lower demand.
Burning Smell or Scorch Marks
This is an emergency. If you can smell burning near your fuseboard or see scorch marks on the casing, turn off the main switch immediately and call an electrician. Loose connections inside the board can overheat and cause fires. Do not attempt to investigate this yourself.
You Are Getting an EV Charger Installed
An EV charger draws up to 7kW, which is a significant additional load on your electrical system. If your fuseboard is old or already near capacity, it will need upgrading before a charger can be safely installed. We always assess the consumer unit as part of every EV charger installation — if it needs replacing, we can do both jobs at the same time, saving you a second visit.
What Happens During a Fuseboard Upgrade?
A fuseboard replacement typically takes half a day. We isolate the supply, remove the old board, and install a new 18th Edition consumer unit with full RCD protection. Every circuit is tested and certified, and you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate as proof of compliance. The power is usually off for 4 to 6 hours, so we recommend planning around this — charging devices, having a flask of tea ready, and letting us know if you have any medical equipment that needs power.
How Much Does a Fuseboard Upgrade Cost?
Every installation is different because the cost depends on how many circuits you have, the condition of your existing wiring, and whether any additional work is needed. Some older properties need earthing upgrades or bonding work before a new board can be fitted. The best way to get an accurate figure is to send us a photo of your existing fuseboard on WhatsApp and we will give you a quote the same day.
