Home EV Charger Installation in Dinnington
MP Electrical installs dedicated home EV charging points across Dinnington, North Anston, and South Anston. A proper 7kW home charger charges your electric car around seven times faster than a three-pin plug — giving you a full battery overnight from a typical evening charge. Every installation is NAPIT registered, fully tested, and comes with your electrical certificate.
We supply and fit all the leading charger brands: Easee, Ohme, Zappi, Hypervolt, and Andersen. We’ll recommend the right one based on your car, your electricity tariff, and whether you have or plan to get solar panels.
Dinnington Properties and EV Charger Suitability
Dinnington’s housing has developed in distinct phases, and each presents slightly different considerations for EV charger installation. The older properties around Laughton Road, Doe Quarry Lane, and the streets near the former colliery site date from the 1920s through to the 1950s. Many are semi-detached with side driveways or rear parking — well suited for a home charger with a short cable run.
The newer estates around Athorpe Road, Lodge Lane, and towards North Anston were built from the 1970s onwards and almost universally have driveways, integral garages, or both. These properties are the most straightforward for EV charger installations — there’s usually a clear wall position near the parking spot, and the cable route from the fuseboard is relatively short.
A few of Dinnington’s older terraced rows don’t have off-street parking, and for these properties a home charger may not be practical. We’ll always be upfront about this during the survey rather than trying to force a solution that doesn’t work properly. Our blog on EV chargers for homes without driveways explores the alternatives.
Garage and Detached Parking Installations
A significant number of Dinnington properties have detached garages — either in blocks at the end of the street or at the rear of the property with access from a back lane. We install chargers at detached garages regularly, but the approach differs from a simple wall-mounted installation on the house.
The charger still needs a dedicated supply from your main consumer unit, which means running an armoured cable (SWA cable) underground from the house to the garage. This involves a small trench, typically 450mm deep, across your garden or yard. The cable is protected in the trench and connected to a small consumer unit in the garage that feeds the charger.
While this adds to the installation time and cost compared to a wall-mounted charger next to the house, it’s often the best solution when your parking spot is remote from the house. We’ll quote for both options so you can make an informed decision.
Electrical Requirements and Fuseboard Capacity
An EV charger draws up to 32 amps continuously — similar to an electric shower — and needs its own dedicated circuit with RCBO protection. In Dinnington’s older properties, the existing consumer unit may not have the capacity for this additional circuit. If your fuseboard is full or outdated, a fuseboard replacement in Dinnington may be needed as part of the installation.
We also check your main incoming supply during the survey. Standard domestic supplies are 80 or 100 amps, which is adequate for a 7kW charger alongside normal household loads. If your supply is lower — which can happen in some of Dinnington’s older properties — we can install a charger with built-in load management that automatically reduces the charging speed when other heavy appliances are running.
Choosing the Right Charger
The charger market has matured significantly, and there are now excellent options at every price point. Here’s a quick overview of the brands we install most frequently in the Dinnington area:
Ohme — best for smart tariff integration. Connects directly to Octopus, E.ON, and other smart tariffs to automatically charge at the cheapest times. Clean, compact design.
Zappi — best for solar homes. Can divert excess solar generation to your car during the day. Also works with smart tariffs. Slightly larger unit but very reliable.
Easee — best for aesthetics. Sleek Scandinavian design, very compact. Good smart features and easy to add a second charger if you get a second EV.
Hypervolt — good all-rounder. Competitive price, solid smart features, UK-designed. A popular choice for straightforward installations.
What to Expect on Installation Day
Installation takes three to five hours for a standard setup, or up to a full day if we’re also upgrading your fuseboard or running cable to a detached garage. We’ll confirm timings when we book.
The work covers mounting the charger, running the dedicated circuit, fitting RCBO protection, installing an earth rod where required, and full testing. We set up the app on your phone and connect the charger to your home Wi-Fi before we leave. Your Electrical Installation Certificate is provided on completion.
If you also need an electrical safety check, we can carry out an EICR in Dinnington at the same visit.
