Getting a home EV charger installed is one of the best decisions you can make as an electric car owner. Charging at home is cheaper, more convenient, and faster than relying on public chargers. But before you book an installation, there are a few things you need to know. As NAPIT-registered EV charger installers in Rotherham, here is everything we cover with customers before we start work.

Can Every Home Have an EV Charger?

Most homes can have an EV charger installed, but there are a few things we need to check first. The main requirement is off-street parking — you need a driveway, garage, or dedicated parking space where the charger can be wall-mounted and a cable can reach your car without crossing a public footpath. If you live in a terraced house without a driveway, there are still options, but they require more planning.

We also need to check your electrical supply. A standard home EV charger draws up to 7kW, which is roughly the same as running two electric showers at once. Your incoming supply needs to handle this additional load safely. In most homes across Rotherham, Wickersley, and Maltby, the existing supply is fine. In some older properties in Mexborough, Denaby, and Barnburgh, we occasionally need to arrange a supply upgrade with Northern Powergrid before installation.

Does My Fuseboard Need Upgrading?

This is one of the most common questions we get. The answer depends on the age and condition of your current consumer unit. If your fuseboard is a modern 18th Edition board with RCD protection and has a spare way available, we can usually add the EV charger circuit directly. If it is an older board without RCD protection, or if it is already full, it will need replacing before the charger goes in.

We always assess the fuseboard as part of every EV charger survey. If it needs upgrading, we can do both jobs on the same day — saving you time and a second visit. This is something we handle regularly for customers across Dinnington, Swinton, and Wath upon Dearne.

Where Should the Charger Be Mounted?

The ideal location is on an exterior wall close to where you park, with the charging port on your car within easy reach of the cable. Most chargers come with a 5 to 7 metre tethered cable, so there is usually some flexibility. We prefer to mount chargers on the side of the house nearest the consumer unit to keep cable runs short, but we can run cables longer distances if needed.

If you have a garage, mounting inside the garage is an option that keeps the charger protected from the weather. We install in both locations across Kiveton Park, Hickleton, and throughout South Yorkshire — it comes down to your preference and your parking setup.

How Long Does Installation Take?

A standard EV charger installation takes around 2 to 4 hours. This includes mounting the unit, running the cable from your fuseboard, installing the dedicated circuit with its own MCB, and carrying out full electrical testing. If the fuseboard also needs replacing, add another 3 to 4 hours for that work.

The power to your home will need to be off for a short period during the installation — usually around 30 minutes while we connect the new circuit to the consumer unit. We always let you know in advance so you can plan around it.

Do I Need Building Regulations Approval?

EV charger installations are notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, which means they must be carried out by a registered electrician. As NAPIT-registered installers, we self-certify all our work, so you do not need to apply for separate building control approval. We handle all the paperwork and you receive your compliance certificate automatically.

What About Smart Charging Requirements?

Since June 2022, all home EV chargers installed in the UK must be smart chargers. This means they must be capable of connecting to the internet, scheduling charging sessions, and responding to demand signals from the grid. All the chargers we install — including Zappi, Ohme, Pod Point, and Easee — meet these requirements as standard. Smart charging also means you can set your charger to only run during off-peak hours, which can cut your charging costs significantly.

Is There a Government Grant Available?

The EV chargepoint grant (formerly OZEV grant) is still available in 2026 for eligible applicants. It provides up to off the cost of a home charger installation for renters, people living in flats, and homeowners in rented accommodation. Owner-occupiers of houses are no longer eligible for the grant, but the running cost savings of home charging versus public charging mean most people see a return on their investment within the first year.

We handle all the grant paperwork for eligible customers across Rotherham and South Yorkshire.
