Why Home Battery Storage Rules Have Changed in 2026
If you are thinking about installing a home battery storage system in Rotherham or anywhere in South Yorkshire, there are important new rules you need to know about. On 15 April 2026, the IET and BSI published Amendment 4 to BS 7671 — the wiring regulations that every electrician in the UK must follow. For the first time ever, there is now a dedicated chapter in the wiring regulations specifically covering battery storage systems in homes.
This matters to you because the new rules strictly limit where a battery can be installed inside your property. If you are getting solar panels fitted and want to add battery storage, or if you already have a battery system installed, these changes could directly affect you.
The previous version of the regulations (Amendment 3) will be withdrawn on 15 October 2026. After that date, every new battery installation must comply with the updated standard. During the current transition period, installations can still be completed under the old rules — but from mid-October, the new requirements become mandatory.
What Is Chapter 57 and Why Does It Exist?
Chapter 57 is a brand new section of BS 7671 that sets out detailed requirements for stationary secondary battery systems — the kind used to store electricity from solar panels, off-peak tariffs, or as backup power for your home.
Until now, there was no specific chapter in the UK wiring regulations dealing with home battery storage. Electricians had to piece together guidance from various sources, including PAS 63100 (the fire safety standard for domestic batteries) and general installation rules. Chapter 57 brings everything under one roof.
The reason for the change is straightforward. Home battery installations have surged across the UK as more homeowners add solar panels and look for ways to reduce energy bills. With that growth has come fire safety concerns. Lithium-ion batteries, the type used in most home storage systems, can undergo a process called thermal runaway if they overheat or are damaged. This can lead to intense fires that are extremely difficult to extinguish.
The new regulations are designed to make sure batteries are installed in locations where, if the worst did happen, the risk to people inside the property is minimised.
Where You Cannot Install a Home Battery
This is the most important part of the new rules for homeowners. Under PAS 63100 — which is now directly referenced by Chapter 57 of BS 7671 (Regulation 570.6.7.203) — home batteries must not be installed in any of the following locations:
Bedrooms and sleeping areas
Any room where people sleep is completely off limits. This includes spare bedrooms, children’s rooms, and any room that could reasonably be used for sleeping.
Lofts, roof spaces and voids
This is a big one. Many early battery installations in the UK were fitted in lofts because it seemed like a convenient, out-of-the-way location. Under the new rules, lofts are explicitly banned. The reasoning is clear — a fire in a loft space is difficult to detect early, hard to access for firefighting, and can spread rapidly through the roof structure.
Escape routes
Landings, staircases, corridors, and hallways used as means of escape are all prohibited. If you need to get out of the house in an emergency, there should be no battery system between you and the exit.
Cupboards that open into bedrooms
Storage cupboards, enclosures, or any spaces that open directly into a room used for sleeping are banned. This prevents a battery fire from directly exposing sleeping occupants.
Cellars and basements with no outside access
If your cellar or basement does not have its own external door or window, a battery cannot be installed there. In a fire, gases from a failing battery need somewhere to vent — a sealed underground space with no outside access creates a serious risk.
Near flammable materials
Batteries must not be placed within 2 metres of stored flammable materials, fuel storage tanks, or gas cylinders.
Too close to doors, windows and vents (outdoor installations)
If the battery is mounted externally, it must be at least 1 metre away from escape routes, doors, windows, and ventilation openings. This stops smoke and gases from being drawn into the house through an open window or vent.
Where You Can Install a Home Battery
The rules are strict about where batteries cannot go, but there are still plenty of compliant locations for most Rotherham homes:
Attached garage with fire separation
An attached garage is one of the most common and practical locations, provided the wall between the garage and the living space has adequate fire rating. For most domestic installations, this means an REI 30 rated wall and ceiling — essentially a wall that can resist fire for at least 30 minutes.
Detached garage or outbuilding
A detached garage, workshop, or outbuilding is an excellent location. Because it is physically separated from the house, the fire risk to occupants is significantly reduced.
External wall mount in a weatherproof enclosure
Many modern battery systems are designed for external wall mounting. This is a popular choice, but remember the 1-metre rule — the unit must be at least 1 metre from doors, windows, vents, and escape routes.
Utility room or plant room with fire separation
An internal utility room can work if it has adequate fire separation from the rest of the house (REI 30 walls, ceiling, and floor). The room also needs passive ventilation to prevent the build-up of gases.
Purpose-built ground-mounted enclosure
Some homeowners opt for a purpose-built enclosure in the garden or yard, similar to the housing used for commercial battery systems. This keeps the battery completely separate from the dwelling.
What About Batteries Already Installed?
This is one of the most common questions homeowners ask, and the answer depends on when your battery was installed and whether you are planning any changes.
Existing installations that were compliant when fitted do not need to be retrospectively upgraded. If your battery was installed before Amendment 4 came into force and it met the regulations that applied at the time, you are not legally required to move it.
However, there is an important caveat. If you make any alterations or additions to your electrical installation — for example, adding more solar panels, upgrading your consumer unit, or extending the battery system — the new rules apply to the altered work. In practice, this could mean that a battery currently installed in a loft would need to be relocated if you carry out any significant electrical changes.
It is also worth considering that just because an existing installation is technically grandfathered does not mean it is as safe as a compliant one. If your battery is currently in a loft, a bedroom cupboard, or any other location now banned under the regulations, it may be worth having a professional inspection to assess the risk and discuss your options.
Fire Safety Requirements Under PAS 63100
PAS 63100:2024 is the fire safety standard specifically written for battery energy storage systems in dwellings under 200 square metres. It was originally published in March 2024 and is now directly referenced by BS 7671 Amendment 4, making it part of the mandatory compliance framework.
The key requirements include:
Smoke or heat detection — the room or space where the battery is housed must have appropriate detection. This is so that occupants are alerted as early as possible if something goes wrong.
Ventilation — battery enclosures need adequate ventilation to prevent the build-up of flammable or toxic gases. For indoor installations, this typically means passive ventilation to the outside. The unit must not be boxed in by combustible materials, and there must be enough room around it to inspect, isolate, and, if necessary, fight a fire.
Thermal runaway protection — the battery system itself must incorporate measures to prevent and mitigate thermal runaway. This includes battery management systems (BMS) that monitor cell temperatures, voltages, and currents, and can disconnect the system if parameters go outside safe limits.
Safe isolation — there must be a clear, accessible means of isolating the battery system from both the mains supply and any generation source (such as solar panels). This is critical for firefighter safety and for maintenance.
How This Connects to Your Wider Electrical Installation
A home battery does not exist in isolation. It connects to your consumer unit, your mains supply, and usually to a solar PV system or EV charger. Amendment 4 also introduced a new Chapter 81 focused on energy efficiency in electrical installations, which ties into how battery storage and renewable generation work together.
If you are considering a battery system as part of a wider smart home electrical setup, it is important that the entire system is designed and installed as a whole, not piecemeal. A battery installation that complies with Chapter 57 but connects to an outdated or overloaded consumer unit creates its own risks.

A registered electrician will assess your entire installation — the battery, the consumer unit, the earthing and bonding, the solar PV connection, and the protective devices — to make sure everything works together safely and compliantly.
What Homeowners in Rotherham Should Do Now
If you are planning a battery installation, the most important thing is to get it right from the start. Here is what I would recommend:
If you are getting solar panels fitted this year — make sure the installer is aware of the new Chapter 57 requirements and that the battery location complies with PAS 63100. Ask specifically where they plan to put the battery and check it against the prohibited locations listed above.
If you already have a battery in a loft or bedroom — it does not need to be moved immediately under the current grandfathering provisions, but you should be aware of the risks and consider a professional assessment. If you are planning any electrical alterations, the battery will likely need relocating.
If you are buying a house with an existing battery installation — ask for evidence that it was installed by a registered electrician and that it complies with the regulations that applied at the time. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) will flag any concerns.
If your installer suggests putting a battery in a loft, under the stairs, or in a bedroom cupboard — this is a red flag. Any electrician working after 15 October 2026 who installs a battery in a prohibited location is not complying with the wiring regulations. Walk away and find a registered professional.
