Bathroom Electrician Rotherham

NAPIT-registered & Part P compliant bathroom electrical installations across Rotherham and South Yorkshire. Safe, certified work you can trust.

Bathrooms are one of the most dangerous rooms in your home when it comes to electricity. Water and electricity are a lethal combination, and that is exactly why UK Building Regulations require all bathroom electrical work to be carried out by a qualified, Part P registered electrician. It is not just best practice — it is the law.

At MP Electrical, Mat has been carrying out bathroom electrical installations across Rotherham and South Yorkshire for years. Whether you are fitting out a brand new bathroom, upgrading an old suite, or simply adding a shaver socket, every job is installed safely, tested properly, and fully certified to current regulations.

Understanding Bathroom Zones and IP Ratings

Bathroom electrical safety revolves around a zoning system set out in BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations). Each zone determines what type of electrical equipment can be installed and what level of water protection it needs:

  • Zone 0 — Inside the bath or shower tray itself. Only SELV (max 12V) equipment is permitted here. Anything installed must be rated at least IPX7 (protected against immersion).
  • Zone 1 — Directly above the bath or shower up to 2.25m from the floor. Equipment must be rated at least IPX4 (splash-proof). Electric showers and instantaneous water heaters are permitted here with the right safeguards.
  • Zone 2 — Extends 0.6m horizontally beyond Zone 1 and the area around a wash basin (0.6m radius). Equipment needs a minimum IPX4 rating. Shaver sockets, luminaires, and extractor fans rated for this zone are all suitable.
  • Outside Zones — The rest of the bathroom beyond Zone 2. Standard equipment can be used here, but it still needs to be protected by an RCD on the circuit.

IP ratings tell you how well a fitting is protected against water. You will see codes like IP44 or IP65 — the second digit is the important one for bathrooms. The higher the number, the better the water protection. We always specify the correct IP-rated fittings for each zone in your bathroom.

Bathroom Electrical Services

We cover every aspect of bathroom electrics, from a single pull cord switch through to a complete electrical fit-out for a new bathroom:

  • Bathroom downlights — LED spotlights with the correct IP rating for each zone, giving you a clean, modern look with low running costs
  • Extractor fans — Timed, humidistat, or basic models to keep condensation and mould at bay
  • Heated towel rails — Hardwired electric towel radiators, properly fused and connected
  • Shaver sockets — Transformer-isolated sockets that comply with bathroom regulations
  • Underfloor heating — Electric mat systems wired in and controlled by a thermostat
  • Mirror lights and demister pads — Illuminated cabinets and heated mirror pads wired safely
  • Pull cord switches — Replacing old switches or fitting new ceiling-mounted pull cords
  • Electric showers — New installations or upgrades, including running the dedicated circuit from your consumer unit

Why You Need a Part P Registered Electrician

Under Part P of the Building Regulations, most electrical work in bathrooms is classified as notifiable. That means it must be either carried out by a registered competent person or inspected and signed off by Building Control — which adds extra cost and delay. As a NAPIT-registered electrician, we can self-certify all our work and issue you a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate directly. This matters when you come to sell your home, make an insurance claim, or simply want peace of mind that the job has been done right.

Across South Yorkshire, we work in all types of properties — from Victorian terraces in Masbrough and Edwardian semis in Moorgate to 1930s council houses in Kimberworth and modern new-builds on estates around Waverley and Manvers. Every property has its own quirks, and bathroom circuits need to account for the existing wiring, earthing arrangements, and consumer unit capacity.

What a Bathroom Electrical Installation Involves

  1. Survey and quote — We visit your home, assess the existing wiring, discuss what you want, and provide a clear, written quote with no hidden costs.
  2. First fix — Cables are run to each fitting location before the plasterer and tiler come in. We coordinate with your other trades to get the timing right.
  3. Second fix — Once walls and ceilings are finished, we connect all the fittings, fans, and switches.
  4. Testing and certification — Every circuit is tested to BS 7671 standards. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate for your records.

Did you know: Around 50 people are treated in UK hospitals every year for electric shocks received in the bathroom. The majority of these incidents involve faulty or incorrectly installed electrical equipment. A properly zoned and RCD-protected bathroom circuit virtually eliminates this risk — which is exactly why the regulations exist.
