Chapeltown’s Growing Demand for Electrical Upgrades
Chapeltown sits in a prime position between Sheffield and Barnsley, and it has become one of the most sought-after areas in South Yorkshire for families looking for more space without moving too far from the city. Ecclesfield, High Green, Grenoside, and Burncross form a corridor of residential neighbourhoods where home improvements are constant — extensions, loft conversions, garage conversions, and garden offices are going up everywhere.
Every one of these projects needs electrical work, and all of it is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Extensions: Getting the Electrics Right First Time

When to involve the electrician
The electrician should be involved at the design stage, not called in after the walls are up. This is because the electrical design affects the structural design. Can my builder do the electrical work in my extension?
Only if your builder is also registered with an electrical competent person scheme (such as NAPIT or NICEIC). Most builders are not registered electricians, and the electrical work in an extension is specialist notifiable work. Always use a separate registered electrician.
How many sockets should my extension have?
The IET On-Site Guide recommends at least eight double socket outlets in a kitchen, four in a living or dining room, and four in a bedroom. These are minimums — most homeowners benefit from more, especially in kitchens and home offices. Planning socket positions during the design stage means you get exactly what you need without paying to add them later.
Should I upgrade my consumer unit as part of an extension project?
