Come December, I get the same calls. A lead through the letterbox, an extension lead under the back door, and an RCD that trips every time it rains. The part of a Christmas display that needs an electrician is the power behind it. That’s what we sort, so your lights go up safely and stay on.

No more leads through the letterbox
If you haven’t got a socket outside, you’ll know the routine. The lights go up, and the lead comes in through a window left open a crack, a door that won’t quite shut, or the letterbox. It’s a draught all December, it’s something to trip over, and an indoor extension lead isn’t made to sit out in the wet.
A proper outdoor socket in the right place fixes all of that. It’s often a fairly quick job when there’s a suitable circuit nearby, though it depends on your property, and we’ll tell you honestly once we’ve had a look.
To be clear about what we do: we don’t hang the lights. We fit the power behind them, so when you put your lights up, there’s a safe place to plug them in.
Tell us what you’d like doing
What we can do for your Christmas lights
These are the jobs that make a Christmas display easier, safer and a lot less hassle to switch on every night.
An outdoor socket where the lights actually are
A weatherproof, RCD protected socket at the front of the house, by the tree or wherever the display goes. For lights that stay plugged in for weeks, I usually recommend one with an in use cover, so the plug stays dry while it’s in.
We can wire an outdoor socket so it’s controlled from a switch indoors. No going out in the rain in your slippers to turn the lights off at bedtime.
Power for a bigger display
Inflatables, projectors and lots of sets add up. A 13A socket handles roughly 3kW in total, so for a big display we’ll look at a second socket or a dedicated circuit rather than loading everything onto one.
Colour changing lighting fitted under the soffits and controlled from your phone. Warm white for most of the year, red and green in December, and no ladders every November.
If the lights were fine until it rained, the RCD is usually doing its job and water has got in somewhere. If it still trips with everything unplugged, that’s when to give us a call.
Send us a photo. Where the lights will go, and where the nearest socket is inside. That’s usually enough for us to tell you what’s involved.
We check what’s there first. The nearest circuit, the RCD protection on it, and whether the job needs a new circuit or can come off an existing one.
A neat job. Cables run tidily, the socket placed where you’ll actually use it, and everything tested before we leave.
Paperwork for what we did. You get a certificate for the work. If it needs a new circuit, that’s notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England, and we register it through NAPIT for you.
Book in October, not December
From late November our diary fills up with jobs people want done before family visits. If you want the power sorted before the lights go up, October or early November is the time to call. You get the best choice of dates, and the socket’s in and tested before the boxes come down from the loft.
Our village lights in Wickersley
Outside the day job, we do the Christmas lights in Wickersley. This will be our fourth year, and it gets bigger every time. The countdown before the switch on is still the longest ten seconds of my year.
It gets the same care as an outdoor socket on your house: planned early, done safely, and tested well before anyone flicks the switch. The full story is on our projects page.
Safe lights, whoever fits the socket
Only use lights marked as suitable for outdoor use outside
Plug outdoor lights into an RCD protected socket
Keep indoor extension leads indoors
Check last year’s lights for damage before they go up
If a timer or smart plug is going outside, make sure it’s outdoor rated
If your RCD keeps tripping, find out why rather than working around it

Mat offers a very professional service from the outset, with all the work we had done carried out to the highest standards. Will use again when we need additional electrical works carried out.

Really pleased Mat and the team, after contacting him for some changes of light fittings. Easy to book the initial quote and after sending pictures this was carried out over the phone. Once accepted, there was good communication about installation date and time. On the day Tom did a great job, working quickly and cleanly, again with good communication about arrival time. Very happy customer.

Superb quality service again from a local trusted electrician I can recommend. Matt delivers a high standard of work and replaced my fusebox to current standards and installed an EV charger.

After recently moving house, I was looking to have CCTV installed and was very specific about wanting a HIK Vision setup. After doing my research, contacting Matt at MP Electrical was an easy decision – the consistently excellent reviews across multiple platforms spoke for themselves.
I completed the online enquiry while working a night shift, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. From the initial contact through to arranging an appointment, everything was smooth and professional. Matt came out to assess the property, advised on the best camera locations, provided a clear quote, and then carried out the installation.
The service provided by Matt was second to none – professionalism and communication throughout were outstanding. I don’t often leave reviews, but they’re the reason I contacted MP Electrical in the first place.
Matt, thank you for everything. Highly recommended!

Matt was prompt and really friendly, work done was to a high standard. Notably I didn’t pick the easiest of light fittings… but this was not an issue. Very professional I would come back to MP electrical for more work.

Mat installed an Addvent Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) system for us to reduce condensation, mould and damp. He was clearly very knowledgable and experienced and his work was completed to a very high standard. Very clean and tidy, will certainly be using him for any electric work in the future. Cheers 👍

Very friendly and professional service with great communication throughout. Mathew installed three Ring Floodlight Camera Pros for us and made sure each one had the best possible coverage and angles.
We were initially worried that our loft wiring might not be accessible, but Mathew quickly found a suitable connection within minutes and handled everything seamlessly.
All external wiring was done neatly and looks excellent, couldn't recommend enough.👍

Excellent electrician service! Mathew installed our external socket quickly, efficiently and to a high standard. The whole process from booking to the actual job visit was seamingless with excellent communication throughout. We tried a few electricians from the area and they either did not get back to us after the initial enquiry or scheduled appointments and never showed up. MP electrical provides a clear booking system with updates and reminders about the appointment. Mathew gave us a reasonable quote after the initial contact and showed up at the agreed time to professionally complete the job. Thank you MP Electrical and we will for sure use your services again in the future.

“Brilliant company, Matt came to do the quote, he was really friendly and explained everything very clearly. Tom came out to do the work and wow. Attention to detail was top tier, very nice bloke. The booking/paying process was also very streamline. I wouldn’t hesitate to use MP Electrical again.”

October or early November is ideal. December is a busy month for us, so booking early gives you the best choice of dates.
Do you put the lights up for us?
No. We do the electrical side: the socket, the switch and the circuit behind it. Putting the lights up is down to you.
Can I leave Christmas lights plugged in outside for weeks?
If the lights are rated for outdoor use and the socket is RCD protected, yes. A socket with an in use cover keeps the plug dry while it’s plugged in.
Can you fit an outside socket I can switch from indoors?
Usually, yes. We’ll look at where the nearest circuit runs and suggest the neatest place for the switch.
Will I need a new circuit?
Not always. A socket can often come off a suitable circuit nearby. A big display, or a socket a long way from the house, can need its own circuit. We’ll tell you which once we’ve had a look.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes, for the work we do. If there’s a new circuit, it’s notifiable under Part P in England, and we register it through NAPIT.
Do you cover my area?
We’re based in Rotherham and work across Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster too.
Are you NAPIT registered?
Yes. MP Electrical is NAPIT registered, and we test our work before we leave.
