Not every electrical job involves ripping out walls or rewiring the house. Some of the most impactful improvements are small, quick jobs that a qualified electrician can knock out in an hour or two — and they can transform how your home feels and functions.

Here are the small electrical jobs we get asked about most often.

Adding Extra Sockets

If you’re relying on extension leads and adaptors in every room, your home doesn’t have enough sockets for modern life. Most houses built before the 2000s were wired with two or three double sockets per room — fine for a lamp and a TV, but not for the laptops, phone chargers, game consoles, and smart devices we use today.

Adding an extra double socket to an existing ring main is straightforward for a qualified electrician. It typically takes around an hour per socket, including chasing the cable into the wall and making good. The result is cleaner, safer, and means no more daisy-chained extension leads — which are one of the most common causes of electrical fires.

Replacing Old Sockets and Switches

Yellowed, cracked, or paint-splattered sockets and switches make a room look tired, no matter how recently you’ve decorated. Swapping them for new white or brushed chrome faceplates is one of the cheapest ways to freshen up a room.

Beyond aesthetics, old sockets can have loose terminals inside that cause intermittent faults or overheating. If a plug sits loosely in a socket or you hear a faint buzzing sound, the socket needs replacing — it’s not just cosmetic.

USB Sockets

USB sockets with built-in charging ports have become one of our most requested small jobs. They replace a standard double socket and add two or four USB ports (Type-A, Type-C, or both) without taking up a plug space. Ideal for kitchens, bedrooms, and home offices where phones and tablets are constantly charging.

Outside Sockets

An outdoor weatherproof socket saves you trailing extension leads through windows to power garden tools, pressure washers, hot tubs, or Christmas lights. It needs to be on its own RCD-protected circuit and installed in an IP66-rated enclosure to keep water out.

We install outside sockets on the rear or side of properties, typically fed from a spur off the kitchen ring main or directly from the consumer unit. It’s a half-day job at most, and it makes garden maintenance and entertaining much more practical.

Dimmer Switches

Swapping a standard light switch for a dimmer gives you control over the mood and brightness of a room. Modern LED-compatible dimmers work reliably with most LED bulbs and can significantly reduce your energy consumption in rooms where you don’t always need full brightness.

One thing to watch: not all LED bulbs are dimmable. If you’re switching to dimmers, make sure your bulbs are rated for it — otherwise they’ll flicker, buzz, or not dim smoothly. We can advise on compatible combinations when we install.

Smoke and Heat Alarms

Battery-powered smoke alarms are better than nothing, but mains-wired, interconnected alarms are the standard for any property built after 1992 — and for all rental properties under current regulations. When one alarm triggers, they all sound, giving everyone in the house maximum warning.

Fitting a full set of interconnected alarms in a three-bedroom house typically takes half a day. We use sealed lithium battery backup units so they’ll still work during a power cut, and you won’t have the annoyance of changing batteries every year.

Light Fittings and Pendants

Changing a ceiling light fitting sounds like a five-minute DIY job, but it’s notifiable electrical work in a bathroom, and in older properties the ceiling rose wiring can be more complex than it looks. We regularly get called to finish jobs that started as “quick” DIY attempts and ended with no lights working in half the house.

If you’re upgrading from an old pendant to a flush fitting, downlights, or a track system, it’s worth having an electrician do it properly from the start.

TV Points and Data Cabling

If you’re mounting a TV on the wall, having a socket and aerial point installed behind the TV keeps everything clean — no trailing cables, no visible wires. We can also run HDMI and Ethernet cables through the wall at the same time.

For home offices, a hardwired Ethernet connection is more reliable and faster than Wi-Fi. We run Cat6 cable from your router to wherever you need a connection, terminated in a neat wall plate.
