Good lighting changes how a room feels more than almost any other upgrade. Yet most homes in Rotherham are still running the same single pendant fitting in the middle of each ceiling that was installed when the house was built. You don’t need a full rewire to fix this — a qualified electrician can transform your lighting in a day or two using your existing circuits.

Here’s how to get better lighting room by room.

Layer Your Lighting

Professional lighting designers talk about three layers: ambient (general background light), task (focused light where you need it for cooking, reading, or working), and accent (decorative light that adds warmth and highlights features). Most homes only have ambient — a single ceiling light that’s either on or off.

Adding a second layer is the single biggest improvement you can make. In a living room, that might mean wall lights or a floor-level LED strip behind furniture. In a kitchen, it’s under-cabinet LED strips that light your worktops properly. In a bedroom, bedside wall lights mean you don’t need to get out of bed to turn off the main light.

Switch to Downlights

Replacing a central pendant with recessed downlights gives a cleaner, more modern look and spreads light more evenly across the room. Four to six downlights in a typical living room or bedroom will eliminate the dark corners that a single pendant creates.

Fire-rated downlights are essential — they maintain the fire resistance of your ceiling by sealing the hole the light sits in. Non-fire-rated downlights from DIY stores leave an open hole into the ceiling void, which in a fire allows flames and smoke to spread between floors within minutes. We only fit fire-rated units.

LED downlights use a fraction of the energy of the old halogen spotlights and last 25,000-50,000 hours. If you still have halogen downlights, switching to LED will cut that circuit’s energy use by around 80% and dramatically reduce the heat in your ceiling void — halogen spotlights are a known fire risk in older installations.

Dimmer Controls

A dimmer switch costs very little more than a standard switch and gives you complete control over brightness. In living rooms and bedrooms, this means full brightness when you’re cleaning or getting ready, and a soft glow for relaxing in the evening.

Modern trailing-edge dimmers are designed specifically for LED bulbs and dim smoothly without the flickering and buzzing that older leading-edge dimmers cause with LEDs. If you’ve tried dimmers before and found they didn’t work well with your LED bulbs, it’s almost certainly because the wrong type of dimmer was fitted.

Kitchen Lighting

Kitchens need the most thought because you’re doing detailed work — chopping, reading recipes, checking whether food is cooked. A single ceiling light casts your own shadow over the worktop, which is exactly where you need light most.

The combination that works best is recessed downlights for general brightness plus LED strip lighting under wall cabinets for task lighting on the worktops. The strips are virtually invisible when off and provide bright, even, shadow-free light directly where you’re working. We hardwire them into a switched spur so they’re controlled from a wall switch — no fiddly plug-in transformers.

Bathroom Lighting

Bathrooms have specific requirements because of the presence of water. Light fittings must meet minimum IP (Ingress Protection) ratings depending on their position relative to baths, showers, and basins. Inside a shower enclosure, you need at least IP65. Above a bath up to 2.25m height, IP44 minimum.

Beyond the regulations, bathrooms benefit from a warm, bright downlight scheme with a separate circuit for a mirror light above the basin. An illuminated mirror or mirror cabinet combines storage with task lighting and is one of the most practical bathroom upgrades you can make.

Garden and Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting extends your usable living space and improves security. Low-voltage LED garden lights along pathways and in planting beds create atmosphere, while a PIR-triggered floodlight on the rear of the house deters intruders and lights up the garden when you let the dog out.

Smart Lighting

Smart bulbs and smart switches let you control your lighting from your phone, set schedules, and create scenes — but they work best when layered on top of a properly designed lighting scheme. A smart bulb in a single ceiling pendant is still a single ceiling pendant.

For the most reliable smart lighting, we recommend smart switches rather than smart bulbs. A smart switch replaces your existing wall switch and works with any bulb, so you’re not locked into one brand and guests can still use the wall switch normally.
