Your consumer unit — often still called a fuse box — is the heart of your home’s electrical system. Every circuit in your house runs through it, and it’s responsible for protecting you from overloads, short circuits, and electric shock. But regulations have changed significantly over the years, and many consumer units in Rotherham homes are now well behind current standards.
Here’s how to tell whether yours needs replacing.
The Biggest Red Flag: No RCD Protection
The most important change in consumer unit regulations is the requirement for RCD (Residual Current Device) protection. RCDs detect dangerous earth leakage faults — the kind that cause electrocution — and cut the power in milliseconds. Since the 17th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (2008), all circuits in a new or replacement consumer unit must have RCD protection.
If your consumer unit doesn’t have RCDs, it doesn’t meet current regulations. This includes old rewirable fuse boxes with wire fuse carriers, and older MCB boards that have miniature circuit breakers but no RCD. In both cases, your circuits are protected against overloads and short circuits, but NOT against the earth faults that cause electrocution and electrical fires.
Rewirable Fuse Boxes
If your fuse box has individual fuse carriers that you pull out, each containing a piece of fuse wire, it’s a rewirable fuse box — and it’s decades behind current standards. These were standard until the 1960s and many are still in service across older Rotherham properties.
The problems with rewirable fuse boxes go beyond the lack of RCD protection. The fuse wire can be replaced with the wrong rating (we regularly find 30A wire in 5A fuse carriers — a serious fire risk). The connections corrode over time. And the response time is much slower than a modern MCB — a rewirable fuse can take several seconds to blow during a fault, compared to milliseconds for an MCB.
Metal Consumer Units
Since January 2016, the regulations (Amendment 3 to BS 7671) require all new and replacement consumer units to be made from non-combustible material — meaning steel or another metal that won’t catch fire. This replaced the old plastic consumer units that could melt and ignite during an electrical fault.
If your consumer unit is plastic, it doesn’t meet current regulations. A plastic consumer unit isn’t automatically dangerous — many have been in service for years without incident — but in the event of an internal fault, a plastic enclosure can catch fire, whereas a metal one will contain the fault.
Labelling and Circuit Identification
Current regulations require every circuit in the consumer unit to be clearly labelled — which room or area it serves and what type of circuit it is (lighting, ring main, cooker, shower, etc.). The labelling must be durable and legible.
We frequently see consumer units with no labelling at all, or with faded handwritten labels that are no longer readable. This isn’t just a regulation issue — if you need to isolate a circuit in an emergency, you need to know which breaker controls which part of the house. Unclear labelling costs time in exactly the situations where time matters most.
Signs Your Consumer Unit Needs Replacing
Beyond the regulatory issues above, there are practical signs that your consumer unit is failing. Frequent tripping without obvious cause usually means a connection inside the unit is deteriorating. Scorch marks, discolouration, or a burning smell around the unit indicate overheating — this is urgent. A buzzing or humming sound from the unit suggests a loose connection that’s arcing. Warmth on the cover when you touch it means excessive resistance somewhere inside.
Any of these symptoms warrants an immediate inspection by a qualified electrician. Don’t ignore them — consumer unit faults are one of the leading causes of domestic electrical fires.
What a Modern Consumer Unit Looks Like
A current-regulation consumer unit is a metal enclosure containing a main switch, two RCDs (each protecting half of your circuits), and individual MCBs or RCBOs for each circuit. This is called a dual-RCD split-load board, and it’s the most common configuration in UK homes.
Some installations use an all-RCBO board instead, where every circuit has its own combined MCB and RCD in a single device. This is the premium option — if one circuit trips, it doesn’t affect any others. On a split-load board, an RCD trip takes out half your circuits at once.

Do You Have to Upgrade?
There’s no legal requirement for homeowners to proactively upgrade a working consumer unit just because it doesn’t meet current regulations — regulations apply to new installations, not retrospectively to existing ones. However, if you have an EICR carried out and the lack of RCD protection is flagged as a C2 (which it almost always is), then the recommendation becomes a formal finding that should be addressed.
For landlords, the position is clearer. If an EICR on a rental property returns C2 findings related to the consumer unit, remedial work is legally required within 28 days.
