What Does an EV Charger Installation Actually Involve?
Having a home EV charger installed means fitting a dedicated charging unit to the outside (or inside) of your property, with its own circuit running back to your fuseboard. It is the single best upgrade you can make when you switch to an electric vehicle — no more relying on public chargers or trailing cables from a three-pin plug.
A proper installation includes the charger unit itself, all cabling from your consumer unit to the charging point, any electrical upgrades your home needs to handle the load safely, and full testing and certification registered with Building Control through NAPIT.
What Affects the Cost?
The cost of installing an EV charger varies from home to home. Here is what makes the difference:
The distance from your fuseboard to the charger location. The closer your fuseboard is to where the charger will be mounted, the less cabling is needed. A charger on the front of a house where the fuseboard is in the hallway is straightforward. A charger at the bottom of a long garden or on the opposite side of the house needs significantly more cable, containment, and labour.
Whether your fuseboard needs upgrading. Many older fuseboards do not have a spare way for an EV charger circuit, or do not meet current regulations. If your consumer unit needs replacing or upgrading to accommodate the new circuit, that is additional work. Read our guide on whether your home electrics can handle an EV charger.
Your home’s earthing and bonding. Your earthing system must be adequate for the additional load. Some older properties need earthing upgrades before a charger can be fitted safely.
The charger you choose. There are several excellent home chargers available in the UK — Zappi, Ohme, Hypervolt, and Tesla Wall Connector are the most popular. Each has different features and price points. We can advise on which suits your situation best. See our guide to the best home EV chargers in 2026.
Your property type. A detached house with a driveway is the simplest installation. A terraced house with no driveway requires more planning — potential cable routes across pavements, dropped kerbs, or rear access. We have installed chargers in all types of properties and can advise on the best approach for yours.
Whether you need a dedicated parking solution. If you do not have off-street parking, there are options including trailing cable channels and community charging schemes, but these add complexity.
What About the OZEV Grant?
The UK government has offered grants toward home EV charger installation costs in the past. Grant eligibility, amounts, and requirements change regularly, so we always check the latest position before quoting. We handle the paperwork if a grant applies to your installation — you do not need to worry about the application process.
Whether or not a grant is available when you enquire, we will always give you a clear, upfront price for the full installation so you know exactly what you are paying.
How Long Does Installation Take?
A typical home EV charger installation takes between three and five hours. If your fuseboard needs upgrading at the same time, allow a full day. We will always confirm the expected timescale before we start.
Your electricity may need to be off briefly while we connect the new circuit to your fuseboard, but we keep disruption to a minimum.
What Is Included in a Proper Installation?
When MP Electrical installs your EV charger, you get:
A site survey. We check your fuseboard, earthing, available capacity, cable route, and mounting position before giving you a fixed price.
Professional installation. All cabling, containment, mounting, and connection carried out by a NAPIT-registered electrician.
Full testing. Every circuit is tested to BS 7671 standards before we hand it over.
Certification. You receive a BS 7671 Electrical Installation Certificate, registered with Building Control. This is essential for your home insurance and any future sale of the property.
A walkthrough. We show you how to use the charger, set up the app, and configure any smart features like off-peak charging schedules.
Why Choose a NAPIT-Registered Installer?
EV charger installation is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. That means it must be either carried out by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme (like NAPIT) or inspected by Building Control — which costs you extra and adds delay.
MP Electrical is NAPIT registered, so we self-certify our work and register it directly. No extra fees, no waiting for inspections, no loose ends.
We also have 311 five-star Google reviews from homeowners across Rotherham and South Yorkshire. That is not a number we take for granted — it represents hundreds of people who trusted us with their home and were glad they did.
