What Does a Fuseboard Replacement Actually Involve?

A fuseboard replacement — sometimes called a consumer unit upgrade — means removing your old electrical distribution board and fitting a modern unit that meets current BS 7671 wiring regulations. It is one of the most common jobs we carry out, and one of the most important for keeping your home safe.

Your fuseboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system. Every circuit in your house runs through it. If it is outdated, damaged, or not up to current standards, it cannot protect you properly from electrical faults, fires, or electric shocks.

What Affects the Cost of a New Fuseboard?

Every home is different, which is why there is no single price for a fuseboard replacement. Several factors affect what you will pay:

The condition of your existing wiring. If your wiring is in good condition, the swap is straightforward. If there are faults, outdated cables, or earthing issues that need fixing first, additional work is required before the new board can be fitted safely.

The number of circuits in your home. A small flat with six circuits is a quicker job than a four-bedroom house with twelve or more circuits. More circuits mean a larger consumer unit and more time to connect and test everything.

The type of consumer unit fitted. All new consumer units must be metal (non-combustible) and fitted with residual current devices (RCDs) as standard. Beyond that, there are different brands and specifications depending on your home’s needs.

Accessibility. If your fuseboard is in an easy-to-reach cupboard, the job is quicker. If it is in a tight loft space, behind a kitchen unit, or in a position that requires the board to be moved, that adds time and cost.

Whether the board needs relocating. Some older homes have the fuseboard in a position that does not meet current regulations — under a staircase, for example, which is no longer acceptable. Relocating the board involves additional cabling and making good afterward.

Testing and certification. Every fuseboard replacement includes full testing and a BS 7671 Electrical Installation Certificate, which is registered with your local Building Control through NAPIT. This is not optional — it is a legal requirement.

How Long Does It Take?

A standard fuseboard replacement in a typical three-bedroom house usually takes between four and six hours. Your electricity will be off for most of that time, so we always recommend planning around it — charge your phone, fill the kettle beforehand, and let us know if there are any circuits you need back on urgently.

If additional work is needed — earthing upgrades, bonding, or rewiring certain circuits — the job may take a full day. We will always tell you what to expect before we start.

Signs Your Fuseboard Needs Replacing

Your board still has rewirable fuses. If you have a wooden-backed board with fuses that use wire rather than switches, it has been outdated for decades. These boards cannot protect you from many modern electrical faults.

You can see green or brown residue. Discolouration, green goo, burn marks, or a smell of burning near your fuseboard are serious warning signs. Do not ignore these — call an electrician immediately.

You are adding new circuits. If you are having an EV charger installed, a house rewire, or adding circuits for a home extension, your existing board may not have enough capacity.

You have had an EICR with a code C2 or C3. If an Electrical Installation Condition Report has flagged your consumer unit as potentially dangerous or in need of improvement, replacing it is usually the recommended action.
