What Is the Ohme EV Charger?
Ohme makes some of the smartest and most affordable home EV chargers available in the UK. Unlike most chargers that simply deliver power and let your car manage the session, the Ohme takes control of when and how your car charges — automatically finding the cheapest electricity rates on your tariff and scheduling sessions to save you the most money.
Ohme chargers connect directly to your energy supplier’s tariff data and make real-time decisions about when to draw power. If you are on a variable or agile tariff, this can make a significant difference to your running costs. We install Ohme chargers across Rotherham and South Yorkshire.
Ohme Models We Install
Ohme Home Pro. The flagship model features a 7kW output, a built-in touchscreen display, and full smart tariff integration. The touchscreen shows your charging status, session costs, and energy usage without needing to open the app. It is a tethered unit, meaning the cable is permanently attached — you simply grab the cable and plug in.
Ohme ePod. A more compact, budget-friendly option that still includes all of Ohme’s smart charging features. It uses a Type 2 socket rather than a tethered cable, so you use your own cable to connect. The ePod is a good choice if you want Ohme’s tariff intelligence at a lower entry point.
Both models offer the same core smart features — the difference comes down to whether you want a tethered cable and touchscreen (Home Pro) or a socket-based unit at a lower cost (ePod).
Key Features of Ohme Chargers
Intelligent tariff integration. Ohme connects to over 20 UK energy tariffs, including Octopus Agile, Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus, and British Gas Electric Driver. The charger automatically shifts your charging to the cheapest half-hour slots throughout the night, so you pay the lowest possible rate without having to set timers manually.
Price cap mode. You can set a maximum price per kWh and the Ohme will only charge your car when the electricity rate drops below that threshold. On agile tariffs where prices change every 30 minutes, this can lead to significant savings.
Solar integration. Ohme chargers can work with solar panel systems to prioritise surplus solar energy for charging. A CT clamp monitors your generation and export, and the charger adjusts its draw accordingly.
Fleet and business features. Ohme has strong support for business users who need to claim mileage or track energy costs for company cars. The app logs every session with timestamped cost data that can be exported for expense claims.
Over-the-air updates. Ohme regularly pushes software updates to add new tariff integrations, features, and improvements — so your charger gets better over time without any hardware changes.
What Is Needed for an Ohme Installation?
Every Ohme installation starts with an electrical survey of your property. We check your consumer unit, main fuse rating, earthing arrangement, and the cable route from your board to the charger location.
The Ohme draws up to 32A at 7kW, so your electrical supply needs sufficient capacity. Most homes in Rotherham have a 60A or 80A main fuse, which is usually adequate. If your supply is marginal, we may need to apply to your distribution network operator for a fuse upgrade — we handle this for you.
A spare way in your consumer unit is required for the dedicated EV circuit. If your board is full or outdated, we may suggest a consumer unit upgrade. The circuit needs 6mm twin and earth cable (or 10mm for longer runs) with a 40A RCBO for protection.
How We Install an Ohme in Rotherham
Installation typically takes three to four hours:
1. Site survey. Mat visits to inspect your electrics, discuss the best position for the charger, and confirm the cable route. You receive a clear, fixed quote.
2. Circuit installation. We install a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to the charger location, including the RCBO, cabling, and any trunking or containment.
3. Charger mounting. The Ohme is mounted on the wall at the agreed position. Both the Home Pro and ePod are compact units that sit neatly on a house wall or garage wall.
4. Wiring, commissioning and app setup. We connect and test the charger, then help you set up the Ohme app. We connect it to your energy tariff so the smart scheduling starts working from day one. We walk you through the key features including price cap mode and session tracking.
5. Certification. You receive a BS 7671 electrical installation certificate, and the installation is registered with NAPIT and notified to building control — all included.
Is the Ohme Right for You?
The Ohme is an excellent choice if saving money on charging is your top priority. Its direct tariff integration and price cap mode make it the most cost-effective smart charger for anyone on a variable or time-of-use energy tariff.
It is also a strong option for company car drivers who need detailed cost tracking for expense claims, and for anyone who wants a charger that genuinely improves over time through regular software updates.
If you have solar panels and want to maximise self-consumption, the Zappi offers more advanced solar diversion. If you want the longest warranty on the market, the Hypervolt offers five years as standard. But for pure smart tariff optimisation, Ohme is hard to beat.
